If your child struggles to read or reads slowly, has delays in spoken language or has problems with spelling, they might need help from a teaching assistant while in school and possibly more time in exams. But you won’t know what your child needs until they have been tested.
A learning disorder is a classification that includes several disorders in which a person has difficulty learning in a typical manner, usually caused by an unknown factor or factors. The unknown factor is the disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive and process information.
How Can Learning Disorders Be Diagnosed?
Learning disorders can be diagnosed with two tests.
This intelligence test — or IQ test — is a standardised achievement test. Children are diagnosed with learning disorders when their performance on these tests is substantially below expected for their age, education and intellectual ability. The child’s learning problems must significantly interfere with academic achievement or daily activities. These can be individual disorders, for example, a reading or a mathematics disorder. Alternatively, the child could have a combination of learning disorders, for example, reading and written expressive disorder; or reading, written and mathematic disorders.
After the tests are completed, their report will allow you to make informed choices about the best way forward to suit your child’s learning needs.
