How our Dysgraphia assessments can help you.
Dysgraphia is a learning disability that involves difficulty with writing.
At Educational Assessments, we can carry out dysgraphia assessments in Brisbane. We offer four packages and one advanced clinical assessment. The first three packages assess all learning disorders, including dysgraphia.
Dysgraphia is a nervous system disorder that affects fine motor skills used for writing. One of the biggest tell-tale signs is that individuals with dysgraphia may hold their pen in a “claw-like” grip. Their whole body may also contort around the paper as they shift their focus on getting the words down on the page. You would be right in thinking that this doesn’t sound particularly comfortable. It’s often why students with dysgraphia avoid writing if they can help it. Also, because so much mental stimulation is dedicated to writing, it’s hard for students to compose their thoughts.
In essence, the act of writing is compromised by a missing link. This link is the act of processing and is hampered by what we refer to as dysgraphia. In short, it’s a learning disability that chiefly affects fine motor skills like writing. However, it can also affect the mental processes behind the act of writing due to the diversion of where the individual’s attention is focused.
Researchers estimate that dysgraphia affects between 5-20% of school-aged children. It’s often associated with other learning disorders such as ADHD or dyslexia, which we also test for in Brisbane.

We also offer dysgraphia assessments outside of our Brisbane clinic and are able to carry out home visits. This way, we can test your child’s learning needs in an environment they’re comfortable in.
What occurs in a dysgraphia assessment?
We employ a number of tests, including the WIAT-III.
The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition (WIAT-III) provides a reliable assessment. It engages reading, language and numerical attainment in one test. Through these tests, we can identify the academic strengths and weaknesses of a student. It does this through assessing fine motor skills, knowledge of grammar and the ability to express thoughts. This informs decisions regarding eligibility of educational services or diagnosis of learning difficulties. At Educational Assessments, our psychologists are able to carry out full cognitive assessments. These provide essential learning and performance data, with an aim to bolster support.
